A professor of biology at MIT since 1978, Robert Horvitz received the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, with Sydney Brenner and John Sulston, for research into genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death. Horvitz is studying how genes control the development of the nervous system. He earned his PhD from Harvard.
