In 1969, James Blair earned a PhD in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He was an engineering manager at RCA until a friend on Wall Street persuaded him to take up finance. He took an entry level job at F.S. Smithers & Co. In 1985, he became a partner at the newly founded Domain Associates.
