George Rathmann

After earning his PhD in chemistry from Princeton in 1952, George Rathmann worked for 21 years for 3M. In 1975 he joined Abbott Laboratories as VP of research and development in diagnostics. It was at Abbott that he became interested in recombinant DNA, compelling him to take a position with Amgen in 1980. As CEO, he led Amgen to become the largest and most successful company in the biotech industry.
