Syntex Corporation moves to Palo Alto
Worldly biochemists

George Rosenkranz moves a large portion of Syntex’s operation from Mexico City to the Stanford Industrial Park in Palo Alto. He appoints Alejandro Zaffaroni as president. As the only significant drug company since the 19th century to enter the pharmaceutical industry as a start-up, Syntex serves as an inspiration to many bioscience entrepreneurs over the next two decades. And after leaving Syntex, Zaffaroni serves as an entrepreneurial role model. From 1968 through 2000, he establishes a string of biomedical companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, including ALZA, DNAX, Affymax, Affymetrix, Symyx, Maxygen, SurroMed, Alexza.
